This article will focus on edgbanding melamine panels. First off, let me point out that there can be big differences in the quality of melamine panels- things like quality of melamine curing, paper weight, adhesion to the panel as well as the quality of the core. An edgebander can't turn bad panels into good ones but can improve the situation.

A major cause of rejected panels is chipped edges on melamine or HPL panels. This is normally caused by a dull router bit if panels are nested on a CNC Router, dull or warped saw blade on a beam saw or table saw, or an out of square pressure roller or glue roller. Chipping on the top and bottom of the panel cut on a saw is normally from a bad main blade. Chipping on the bottom only of a panel cut on a saw is usually due to a bad, misaligned or missing scoring blade. Nesting routers can sometimes fracture the edge but not actually loosen the chip. Once this panel is edgebanded, the pressure rollers that close the top/bottom of the banded edge will pop the chip loose.

Many companies are making the decision to purchase an Edgebander with pre-mill since this can all but eliminate chipped edges due to panel sizing or nesting. It can also remove a score line that was set too deep for whatever reason. Pre-milling can usually remove up to 3mm of wood which can usually get even the largest chips. Of course, the user must compensate for the change in panel dimension.

If your edgebander has pre-mill and it is being used and you still have chipping, first closely inspect the pre-mill cutters for glue and resin build up as well as chipping or excessive wear. If you are not using diamond tooling in the pre-mill you should invest in it. Carbide cutters can wear out in a short time, especially at the laminate edge. Diamond cutters on the other hand, can last in excess of one year. Even with sharp tools, glue and resin build up can cause chipping on melamine, especially if it is brittle or thin.

Another possible cause for chipping is misalignment of the panel edge and the application roller. If the angle is severe enough the glue roller contacting only the upper or lower edge can cause chipping. Use a precision square and verify the panel edge is perpendicular to the face. If not, adjust your panel saw or router for verticality.

The easiest way to check verticality of the glue application roller is as follows:

*Build up a panel to near the maximum thickness accepted by the edgebander

*Trim the edge and verify it is perfectly perpendicular or use the pre-mill if equipped

*Run the panel through the machine with only glue applied to the edge NO BANDING

*There should be an even spread of glue from bottom to top of the panel.

If necessary adjust the perpendicularity of the glue roller according to the manufacturer's specifications until an even coat is applied along the entire length of the panel. If this needs to be adjusted very much you may need to adjust the rest position and float of the glue pot. Be sure the glue pot moves back 1mm while in contact with the panel.

One additional thing I have run into that causes chipping is related to nested based CNC cutting. If the tool does not penetrate far enough through the material or the corner of the tool rounds off, a flashing (0.001-0.002") will be left on the bottom edge of the panel that is not visible to the naked eye but will cause chipping when it comes in contact with the glue roller.

Save yourself some headaches and backup your machine PC!

-HDD Backup

What PC component is the most likely to fail? I don't have any statistics to back this up but I am pretty certain that this component is one with moving parts. Keyboard, mouse, CD-ROM.....all of these can be replaced easily. But what about the hard disk drive?

What would happen to your production schedule if the hard disk drive in your machine's PC crashed? Do you have the media required to reinstall whatever version of Windows is on your machine's PC? Every Busellato ships with a copy of Windows but I would guess that less than 1/2 of these copies are kept in a safe place after the machine is installed. If you can put your hands on a copy of Windows that will work for your machine you would also need the machine control software. Do you know where that is?? Normally it is kept with the Windows CD. Finally, if you are lucky enough to have the Windows AND machine control software, do you have a set of custom disks to restore all the tooling and parameters that are specific to your machine as it is used today?

Even with all of these pieces available and up-to-date, it will take (at best) 2 to 3 hours and probably a couple of conversations with a technician to restore.

Why not save yourself some trouble and headaches and create an image or complete backup for the hard disk drive while the machine is running properly. With a backup on hand, it will likely take longer to buy the replacement disk drive than it will to recover the image or backup. These restorations may be as short as 15 minutes with a Windows 98 or Windows NT backup, a little longer for Windows 2000 and up to an hour for Windows XP. That is a much quicker than finding all the disks, buying new equipment, getting it loaded, etc. etc. and the machine should perform just as it did when the backup was made.

Immediate benefits available to you!

Well it's that time of year again and I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about the immediate benefits available to you with the recent enactment of the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010. Just had our first, yes first problem requiring a service technician to come to the shop! First I must say, the phone tech support was as usual FREE and outstanding. Matt and Mark did everything in their power to get us up and running before a tech was called, and I might also add that the down machine was 5 1/2 years old (my other is 8). Service tech, Sean (delightful and competent) was there within 24 hours, problem solved and back running!!! Yes, it might sound like a sales plug, and it is, because these guys deserve to succeed and are committed to keeping you up, running and making money. Folks, there are a lot of cnc choices out there and when there is a problem, that's the real test of an organization. These guys are on top of the game. I will sleep well tonight. That is, know how long, how wide, where, and how fast. This information is critical to the sanding unit. It must know when the part will arrive, the area that needs to be sanded and how long the part will be in position to sand. Precisely knowing these facts, the sanding unit can do its job correctly and consistently. This sensing device is located at the entry of the sander. It can be accomplished with either sensing rollers using limit switches or with touch-less proximity type switches.

< 3. Anti-Dubbing controls (sanding start/stop) - The sander must have the ability to precisely control when the sanding platen starts sanding and, equally as important, when to stop sanding. This control takes its orders from work-piece sensing and must have the capacity to perform its function regardless of the feed speed. The anti-dubbing controls are normally a function of the controller and can be adjusted by keying in numeric values that correspond to the position of the leading and trailing edges of the work-piece when entering the sanding zone.

< 4. Segmented Platen - The key element to a veneer configuration is the sanding/segmented platen. For sanding veneer, solid platens are problematic at best. Segmented platens are the only foolproof type of platen that should be used. Segmented platens are offered with various width segments; from 15 mm to 50 mm, depending on the manufacturer. Obviously the narrower the segment the greater the control, but unfortunately the downside is that narrower segments are more expensive. For most applications 25 to 30 mm wide segments are sufficient. There are several reasons why segmented platens must be used. First, with segmented platens, only the segments that are required to sand any given work-piece are deployed. All other segments remain in the up position. This allows the following:

a. “Multi-track” feeding- this is the ability of the operator to fill the full width of the feed conveyor with parts and not be concerned about dubbing the leading edges. With a solid platen, this is not possible.

b. Deployment of more (+) or less (-) segments at the work-piece edge- Depending on its composition, a work-piece may require special edge sanding. Raw edged panels may require a lighter touch or fewer segments on the edge, whereas panels with solid wood rims may require more aggressive sanding or more segments on the edge. This is the +1 or -1 feature that most segmented platens offer.

< 5. Variable Abrasive Belt Sanding Speeds - A single speed abrasive belt drive allows the operator very little, if any, control over sanding aggressiveness. Depending on the species of the veneer, its thickness, and its initial condition, abrasive belt speed should be controllable. Minimum controllability is a 2 speed drive; normally 9 and 18 mps (30 and 60 fps). Preferably, an inverter controlled motor is recommended with a speed range of 3 to 18 mps (9 to 60 fps). This speed range provides the operator with tremendous flexibility. Very slow for a finer, lighter touch or very fast for a more aggressive touch. All of the speeds in between can be used for various applications related to the specie of veneer or ultimate finish.

< 6. Electronic Controller - Once you have configured a sander with the above components it is essential that it also be equipped with an electronic controller. The controller not only manages the machine but also has the ability to save sanding routines. This provides the operator with the convenience of developing routines, and storing the settings under a specific name or number. The next time he runs the same part, he does not need to “re-invent the wheel”. The program is there and only needs to be recalled from memory. The machine sets-up to the necessary configuration and is ready to run. This is also very convenient when there are multiple operators.

A properly configured and equipped sander as described above will provide the owner with perfectly sanded veneer; consistently. Can you sand veneer without all of these features? Yes. Can you do it on a consistent basis? Probably not. Ultimately, if you’re sanding only the occasional veneered panel, you can do it with a lesser equipped machine. If you’re not sure, contact us and we will be happy to make recommendations.

Who has time for that???

All of us out there have, at some point, spent time converting measurements. The fact is, we don't all work off the same measurement format. Yes, there are pages of formulas you can memorize but come on now, who has time (or room left in their brain) for that. We have found this handly little shareware that we have been using that will convert imperial area, distance, length, speed, temperature, volume and weight measurements to metric measurements and vice versa plus just about any other measurement you can think of. If you need to know how many megabytes there are in a gigabyte, kilowatt to horsepower, it can do that too.

So, if you have a part drawing in inches and you need millimeters or you find your self needing to know how many tablespoons are in a gallon, this will come in handy. Guess that's enough rambling for now. Their client purchased a chair that had an image of a man smoking a pipe. Exclusive Woodworking was asked to repair the damage to the chair and make it taller so it didn't sit so low to the ground. They also wanted a second chair to match except they wanted an image from a Norman Rockwell painting on it.

The craftsmen at Exclusive Woodworking got to work and created a 3D model of the image and then made the matching chair. Once both chairs were completed, they finished them to match. These chairs have a new home in Big Johnny's Pub. Big Johnny's Pub has an antique bar that was shipped over from Ireland, custom profiled molding on the ceiling and beautiful bar cabinetry that Exclusive Woodworking refurbished as well using their Busellato CNC Machining Center.

Kudos to all of you at Exclusive Woodworking - this is an absolutely amazing work of art!

It seems appropriate to leave you with an old Irish saying
"As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way."

See ya!
Gerri

Visiting our blog will be like taking your brain to the gym!

One of the (few) nice features of our old website was the Busellato Users Forum. It provided Delmac an outlet to present knowledge about woodworking industry applications and a venue for customers to ask general questions amongst themselves and of our staff. As we said good riddance to the old website and introduced the new one earlier this year, we decided to put our service and outreach efforts into blogging. The purpose of this blog is to provide a service to our customers, keeping you up-to-date with all that's constantly happening at Delmac from our product updates, service updates, specials, customers interviews, plus much more, without you having to search through the site for new added info. You can ask the presenter questions plus view in depth aspects of the machine. This new technology gives you the ability to include your entire production team without leaving your facility or busting your travel budget.

Is there an industry application or topic you would like to learn more about? Let us know! We offer educational webinars, software training and software demonstrations with LIVE Meetings. No waiting on a technician to arrive or trying to "de-code" instructions over the phone, our trained technicians can connect to your computer from our service office in Greensboro, NC and resolve the issue. Our aim is to get your machine up and running and get your production moving as soon as possible.

At Delmac, our goal is to provide our customers with exceptional support and value added services to help you succeed. But still, when faced with custom products, short lead times, raw material defects and the inevitable engineering screw ups, modifying a program at the machine has its advantages. Empowering the operator to quickly modify a program and run it now, versus him leaving the machine and going to the front office to explain and wait for a corrected program just makes sense in a lean manufacturing environment.

So one of the purposes of Delmac's blog will be to share some of the powerful editing commands in Genesis Evolution, especially as they relate to improving efficiency on the shop floor. So use one of many tools to follow our blog... Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or click the RSS feed to follow us in your favorite reader...to know when we update it.

In today's blog, I'll go over how to move a router start point (Mill Setup in GenEvo-speak) to another point along the tool path and add a helical lead in and lead out. Follow the link to our online video library to see the technique demonstrated. And give some feedback here on the blog once you've watched the video.

Thanks for reading.

Bill

<!-- copy and paste.
